Selection of cortical dynamics by the basal ganglia
Reservoir computing models can describe the dynamics of the cortex. Cortical populations, possibly at the column level, can be seen as recurrent networks that utilize temporal dynamics.
The basal ganglia select different cortical dynamics within the cortex through a disinhibitory mechanism. This selection process is influenced by neuromodulation, particularly dopamine levels in the striatum.
